The top stories in Pattaya from last week: Pattaya kicks off mass vaccination campaign, mansion shootings, and more

Hello Pattaya News Readers and Supporters!

The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area, Pattaya and Chonburi, for the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.

These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed as we publish many stories daily and it is easy to lose track of important events or changes in our area. We do national recaps in a separate article.

They are in no particular order of importance. These are from Sunday, May 16th, 2021, to Saturday, May 22nd, 2021.

Let’s get started and see what the top local stories were!

1. Chonburi eases dine-in but keeps all other provincial rules the same

Chonburi province eased dine-in, a longer period for take-away food, and for convenience stores to be open last week per the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, or CCSA, guidelines but despite many people hoping the Governor would ease provincial-level rules like the closure of swimming pools and gyms, for now, he has not. Another review of the measures is likely to come by the end of this week.

2.  Beach closures in Pattaya (as well as park closures in Bangkok) lead to confusion and anger

For now, beaches remain closed except for exercise, although the enforcement of the measures differs greatly depending on the time of the day and the beach. Many of our readers feel beaches should be reopened and perhaps a decision on that may come later this week from the Governor at the bi-weekly review of measures and rules. Then again, perhaps not.

3.  Twenty people arrested at Pattaya restaurant for allegedly drinking beer, owner arrested for alleged sales of alcohol

One day after dine-in at restaurants became allowed, this happened. This incident, as well as several others in Bangkok, led to the Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan O’Cha actually warning restaurants to follow the rules (aka no alcohol sales) or face closure once again.

4.  Koh Larn remains closed until at least the end of the month

Although Koh Si Chang (and in Rayong, Koh Samet) is open, Koh Larn residents through their island council, elders, and headsman have decided to stay closed for now to non-residents. The decision was difficult, according to island leaders, as the island is nearly 100% dependent on tourism for their income and was doing well in terms of domestic and local tourism prior to the closure.

5.  Pattaya city to replace public park…with a parking garage in Naklua

This story drew very mixed reactions on both our Thai language news and English language news. Some readers felt the parking was well needed for the busy local markets, but many felt removing one of the few green spaces in Naklua was a poor decision.

6. Special Weapons and Tactics officers secure luxury mansion in Pattaya area, two officers reportedly shot by foreign national

The biggest story of the week, by far.

7. Pattaya begins its mass vaccination campaign against Covid-19

It’s a start. There is a long, long way to go, but it is a start.
