Thailand-
The following is a weekly feature article looking at this same time period LAST year in Pattaya and Thailand news.
This weekly feature takes a look back at news from the same period last year (and sometimes different time windows, such as six months or three months) to see how things have changed, following up on the progression of stories, as well as look at potentially broken promises or things that didn’t take place as promised in Pattaya and Thailand.
As we publish dozens of stories a week this is a quick way for people to take a look at what the biggest stories were a year ago, as chosen by our editorial team, and how they impact us today and relate to current news. They are in no particular order of importance, however, are roughly in order of publication.
This week, we cover the first week of February 2021, from Sunday, January 31st, 2021 to Saturday, February 6th, 2021.
Let’s go!
1. Myanmar announces military takeover
It’s been one year and despite widespread criticism and protests for the past year, the takeover continues. Thailand stated it was an internal matter and mostly maintains this position a year later.
2. Underground cable project kicks off on Walking Street, expected to take one year
It’s not done yet, although according to City Hall a lot of progress has been made. There was a delay for several months last summer when everything was “paused” due to Covid-19 lockdowns, especially at migrant construction worker camps.

3. Pattaya holds a welcome back campaign to domestic tourism
This was after a five-week closure in January of last year of, well, almost everything due to Covid-19 cases in the area.
4. Multiple Pattaya area residents file complaints against bank assistant manager for alleged fraud
A year later, there is still, as of press time, no sign of their money being refunded despite an escalating campaign.
5. Pattaya hopes to become a world-class film festival city
Still hoping, a year later.

6. Goodbye Pattaya goes viral as many Pattaya residents leave
A year later, things are “very slowly” improving but with entertainment still legally closed and border restrictions still in place along with a complex Test and Go entry program, many have not returned.
That is all for this week! Stay safe and see you next week!
