Thailand-

The following is a weekly feature article looking at this same time period LAST year in Pattaya and Thailand news.

This weekly feature takes a look back at news from the same period last year (and sometimes different time windows, such as six months or three months) to see how things have changed, following up on the progression of stories, as well as look at potentially broken promises or things that didn’t take place as promised in Pattaya and Thailand.

As we publish dozens of stories a week this is a quick way for people to take a look at what the biggest stories were a year ago, as chosen by our editorial team, and how they impact us today and relate to current news. They are in no particular order of importance, however, are roughly in order of publication.

This week, we cover the fifth week of SEPTEMBER 2020/first week of October, from Sunday, September 27th, 2020 to Saturday, October 3rd, 2020.

Here we go:

1. Pattaya City Council urges for the demolishment of the Waterfront Condo at Bali Hai Pier

Well, one year later, and it is still standing, still under demolishment orders, still tied up in dozens of lawsuits and legal issues, and seems to be no further to being taken down than last year. When do YOU think it will finally come down? Tell us in the comments below.

2.  Thailand cracks down on illegal internet gambling

This has been an area for the past year that Thailand has continually enforced and raided, bringing down some of the larger players in the area and raiding and arresting hundreds over the past year. However, like weeds, as fast as the police seem to bring them down, more pop up. In December of last year, the second wave of Covid-19 in Thailand was widely blamed on an illegal casino in Rayong (and later Chonburi), which caused even further crackdowns on illegal gambling lasting to this day.

3.  Beach Renovation underway for “Neo Pattaya”

One year later, it had just started last month when the city attempted to take out multiple trees on Pattaya Beach and caused protests and a firestorm from the local community. They have now pledged to not take out any more trees and shade and are planning to continue the project throughout this year and into the next one.

4.  Thailand’s new police chief scraps drunk driving checkpoints temporarily

This actually lasted several months and has been started and stopped several times since. Police stated it is to stop corruption, but is also due to Covid-19 and less traffic, especially at night, due to alcohol bans at restaurants, closure of entertainment venues for the past six months, and overnight curfews.

5.  Director of Zoological Park Organization of Thailand shot dead, prime suspect commits suicide

This was a major story last year, especially on Thai media.
