Thai court of appeal upholds death penalty for Lopburi gold shop shooter, finding his actions ‘inhumane’

Bangkok –

Thailand’s Court of Appeal today, July 20th, has upheld the death penalty for a former school director, Prasittichai “Golf” Khaokaew, for shooting dead three people, including two adults and a two-year-old child, and injuring four others during a gold shop heist at a Lop Buri mall in January of last year, 2020.

The sentence was read at the Criminal Court today following legal action from a criminal prosecutor, the gold shop company, and ten other victims or families of victims. The Court had upheld the death sentence and refused to reduce the penalty, reasoning that his actions were inhumane.

Prasittichai was guilty of murder, attempted murder, robbery, and illegal firearm and weapons possession for the case of the gold shop robbery and murder at the department store in Lopburi Province on January 9th, 2021.

Early last year, the 38-year-old former schoolmaster was armed with a pistol attached with a long silencer and robbed the Aurora gold shop inside a Robinson department store in Lopburi around 8:44 PM.

There, he callously killed mall security guard Theerachat Nimma, two-year-old Panuwit Wongyoo, and female employee Thidarat Thongthip and injured others at the scene before leaving the scene with thirty-three gold necklaces worth about 665,470 baht.

Bangkok Criminal Court had sentenced the shooter to death along with other penalties on August 27th, 2020. He was also ordered to pay compensation to the families of those he murdered and to the people he injured with 7.5 percent of interest per year.

The Court of Appeal, however, reduced the interest rate from 7.5 percent to 5 percent compensation per year, totaling 6.36 million baht, from April 11th, 2021, onwards.
