Pattaya —
Transgender thieves struck again in Pattaya, this time targeting a Bahraini tourist who reportedly lost over 11,000 baht. The 55-year-old tourist Mr. Hasan Mohamed Almuqahwi was riding a Baht bus (Songtaew) around 1 AM today, September 28th, when the incident took place.
A video version of this story is here.
The tourist said two transgender people hopped on the bus on Soi Buakhao and flanked him. They then tried to talk to him from both sides to create a diversion. A Songtaew is a popular mode of public transportation used in Pattaya, essentially riding in the back of a customised pickup truck.
When the bus reached Mr. Hasan’s hotel, he left the bus and felt one of the transgender individuals reach into his pocket and grab something out of it. He then turned back to find the pair had also jumped off the bus and were quickly running away. The tourist was outrun, so he decided to seek assistance from Pattaya Police.
In total, Mr. Hasan said he lost about 11,000 baht (7,000 in Thai baht and 60 Danish Kroner or about 5,000 baht) along with some important documents.
Pol. Lt. Col. Akkarapong Saenputawong coordinated with the police investigative team to inspect the incident scene and collected CCTV footage.
Pickpockets targeting foreign tourists made several headlines in the past in Pattaya.
For instance, in May 2023, two Indian tourists reported their gold necklaces being stolen by transgender thieves near Beach Road. One of the necklaces was allegedly worth over 66,000 baht.
