Thailand week in review: Thai-Saudi relations reestablished, Cannabis Act draft proposed to council, and more

Here is a look at the top NATIONAL stories, chosen by our Pattaya News/TPN National team, from last week, January 24th to the 30th, with some commentary. They are not in any particular level of importance but are listed in the order of date of publication.

1. Thailand and Saudi Arabia agree to restore diplomatic relationship

The frozen relationship of both countries has now been reestablished last week for the first time in more than 30 years in the government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha. After meeting with the Saudi Arabia crown prince, the Prime Minister made an online statement that both would resume a diplomatic relationship, initially by establishing mechanisms in several bilateral aspects. The restoration was believed to facilitate travel between the peoples of the two countries and create more business opportunities in Thailand.

2. Thailand’s Cannabis Act Draft proposed to House of Representatives for law approval

The implementation of the Cannabis Act in Thailand is likely to become law in the near future as many governmental departments had approved the act, in principle, and shown their full support of the legalization of some parts of the plants. The Act is now proposed to the House of Representatives for consideration.

3. Royal Thai Navy conduct aircraft survey to observe and assist with crude oil spill in Rayong yesterday

The crude oil spill from the Star Petroleum Refining Company (SPRC) had drawn public attention and critics throughout the week. The company claimed that the leak began on a floating jetty on Tuesday evening around 9:00 P.M. and eventually stopped on Wednesday morning. However, the spill has now widely spread in the sea and now washed ashore on Rayong’s natural beach attractions. The authorities continued to clean up the spill but could not say when the removal processes would be completed.
