Top local stories in Pattaya from last week- Pattaya beach remodel contested, protests continue, and more…

Hello Pattaya News Readers and Supporters!

The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area, Pattaya and Chonburi, for the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.

These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. We publish many stories daily and it is easy to lose track of important events or changes in our area. We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in our area and province.

They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Sunday, August 15th, 2021, to Saturday, August 21st, 2021.

Let’s get started and see what the top local stories were!

1. Pattaya Beach remodel project temporarily paused after a group of prominent Thai residents protest

The already delayed for one year Pattaya Beach remodel was paused further due to local residents protesting the destruction of trees and nature in the area. As of now, the project continues but the landscape portion is on pause as the Mayor plans to meet with protesters opposed to plans to remove many long-standing trees in the area.

2. Pro-democracy protesters from the Pattaya area join recent protests in Bangkok

Our own local protesters who have had several car rallies upset about the government’s measures to control Covid-19 joined protests in Bangkok last week. They did, however, remain peaceful and did not join a small independent group that continues to conflict with police.

3. Banglamung Police arrest eighteen people for holding an illegal birthday party in Pattaya

Due to Covid-19 rules in Chonburi and Pattaya, any gathering around alcohol with more than one person remains against the law. This includes birthday parties. The rules, which have stretched on for months, are starting to cause anger and fatigue from local residents. Bars, nightlife, and entertainment have been closed since April 10th.

4. 79-year-old man loses arm after being attacked by a neighbor’s dog in Chonburi

Without a doubt, one of our most commented stories of last week with opinions on all sides.

5. Twenty-one people were arrested in the Soi Buakhao area for allegedly gathering, drinking alcohol, and breaking Covid-19 rules

Our most commented, shared and discussed article last week. Opinions were fierce on this topic, similar to the dog attack, with people on all sides. Many felt those arrested deserved it. Many felt the rules closing bars (close to five months now) are over the top and should be lifted. Regardless of opinion, it was a major story last week.
