Three still missing in Samui ferry accident, two dead, two more rescued

Koh Samui-

Three people remain missing as of this early evening in the aftermath of the capsizing of a ferry, the Raja 4, off the coast of Koh Samui transporting garbage trucks and other vehicles to Surat Thani.

A total of sixteen people were on the boat, the majority being crew members, when the accident took place at around 10:00 PM last night. Our previous article on the incident can be found by clicking here.

Two men were rescued earlier today in the rough sea after an entire night in the surf. They were reportedly wearing life jackets. Both men were stated to be in good condition despite having spent over twelve hours in the ocean waiting for assistance.

Two men were found deceased, including the Captain of the ferry who was reportedly found almost 2 kilometres from the accident on Mod Dang island without a life jacket. It is believed he may have attempted to swim to the island and failed, Surat Thani authorities added. The other deceased man was identified as a sales representative and found on Koh Tan island. Both were found mid afternoon Sunday, August 2nd, 2020 and reported by the Surat Thani Public Relations social media page.

The search continues for three people still missing and involves multiple Royal Thai Navy and marine rescue vessels. The local government is also restricting boats and vessels in the area over the next few days which the Thai Meteorological Department has forecast as having rough seas due to a tropical storm in Vietnam.
