Chinese Man in Distress: Self-Harm Incident in Pattaya Draws Emergency Response

Pattaya—

At 8:30 PM, on December 29th, 2023, Pattaya Rescue Radio Center received a report of a Chinese person committing self-harm at a luxury village in Soi Khao Talo, Bang Lamung, Chonburi.

Nong Prue police and Pattaya volunteer rescue teams were dispatched to the incident scene and found a 25-year-old Chinese man, whose name was withheld as is editorial policy during these types of incidents, using a sharp object to harm himself, causing deep wounds to his neck. The officers and his friends tried to persuade him to calm down, however, the Chinese man resisted dropping the sharp object and going to a hospital.

After 20 minutes, the Chinese man had vertigo from losing too much blood, the police then charged at him and tied him to a spinal board with a force of 10 officers. The Chinese man was transferred to a nearby hospital urgently.
According to a report by the police, Mr. Watcharachai Saengchanloi, a 34-year-old village security chief, said that he received a report from a resident that the Chinese man used a sharp object to harm himself and climbed a wall in an attempt to flee. Watcharachai then reportedly called the police for help, said the police.
Initially, the Chinese man’s friends reportedly said to the police via an interpreter that the Chinese man had depression, but they could not determine the exact reason for him to harm himself.

The incident went viral on some social media where it was being livestreamed, leading to questions about response times. Rescue officials, however, said that they could not risk the man harming them or himself further and that they responded according to policy.
