Stressed Expat Threatens to Harm Himself with Knife in Sattahip, Police Calm Him Down

Sattahip —

A stressed expatriate of France nationality threatened to harm himself with a knife reportedly following financial problems. However, the intense situation was peacefully resolved with the help of the Sattahip police.

On December 28th, 2023, at 4:30 PM, officers from the Sattahip Police Station, along with emergency responders, rushed to a residence in the Bang Saray sub-district, Sattahip district, Chonburi province, after receiving a report of a 51-year-old French man (name withheld), threatening himself with a sharp object. Upon arrival, police found the man in a state of agitation, walking topless with the long knife pointed at his chest and demanding officers stay away.

For over two hours, Sattahip officers engaged in patient negotiations with the man, eventually convincing him to lower his weapon and allow his wife and son to speak to him. The family’s emotional pleas, combined with the officers’ calm demeanor, contributed to the man’s gradual de-escalation. Once deemed safe, Sattahip police escorted him back to his home and placed him under the care of his family.

According to the victim’s Thai wife (name withheld), her foreign husband’s outburst stemmed from a combination of financial difficulties and marijuana use. She stated that her husband was short on money, so he asked her to mortgage their house with the bank.

However, the bank’s mortgage approval process, which took 3-4 months, caused him significant stress. His wife also mentioned her husband’s frequent marijuana use, which she said may have exacerbated the situation. She explained that her husband had also smoked marijuana before the incident occurred.
