Pattaya Hit By Heavy Rains and Flooding

Pattaya —

Pattaya was inundated early this morning with nearly one hour of unexpected rain reportedly caused by storm systems originally stemming from Tropical Storm Koinu.

Several flood-plagued areas in the city such as Sukhumvit Road, South Pattaya, Pattaya Beach Road, Third Road near the Paniat Chang intersection, Moom Aroi intersection, and the road along the railway were inundated as a result of a sudden heavy rain, which occurred around 20 minutes past midnight on Tuesday, October 10th.

Most flooded roads had become temporarily impassable to small vehicles due to the water level reaching as high as 50-80 centimeters.

Many sedans with low ground clearance became stuck on the flooded roads, and their tires were also submerged, causing damage.

Traffic officers were promptly dispatched by Pattaya City to facilitate traffic flow, set up warning signals, and help commuters who had become stuck on the submerged roads.

Thanks to the new and larger drainage system, the flooding in most areas subsided relatively quickly, said city officials.

The torrential rain appeared to be a consequence of Tropical Storm Koinu, which contradicted an earlier weather forecast by the Thai Meteorological Department, which stated that the storm would not directly affect Thailand’s weather conditions.

According to the department’s report, Tropical Storm Koinu is moving in the southern coastal region of China, centering at approximately 21.4 degrees north latitude and 112.8 degrees east longitude.

It has a maximum wind speed near its center of about 65 kilometers per hour. The storm is moving slightly southwestward at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour. It is expected that on October 10th-11th, the storm will pass through China’s Hainan Island area and gradually weaken.
