Bangkok —

An engineering team examined the recent Bangkok stadium roof collapse and revealed 3 possible causes.

On October 4th, 2023, an initial examination on the Bangkok stadium roof that collapsed from heavy rains on October 3rd, by the Thailand Structural Engineers Association (TSEA) and relevant agencies, found that the end of wire ropes slipped from anchor points leading to a steel beam losing support. There are 3 possible main causes:

  • Due to heavy rains, the canvas may not be able to hold mass water leading to heavy build up of massive water weight onto rains gutters. Hence, the end of the wire rope slipped from the anchor points.
  • Rusty iron wedges that have wire ropes pass through may have slipped and lost support.
  • The base structure which is more than 50 years old, deteriorated.

According to the current state of the stadium roof and rainy season, the engineering team stated that the stadium structure is a spherical shape resembling a dome, and parts of the canvas are damaged which may result in a further collapse in the future.
The facility will be temporarily closed for further examination and evaluation. The process would take more than 9 months for maintenance and reconstruction and events scheduled for the stadium would be held elsewhere during the interim.
