Chonburi Couple Arrested for Concealing Miscarried Infant

Chonburi —

A Thai couple was arrested on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, for trying to conceal their allegedly miscarried infant by burying it near the Huai Chak Nok Reservoir near Pattaya.

The arrest was made by Huay Yai police in collaboration with Pattaya police.

The officers received a tip-off from concerned citizens that a man was seen suspiciously attempting to bury something under a tree near the Huai Chak Nok Reservoir in the Huay Yai sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province.

The police quickly located the man and detained him. He was identified only as Mr. Off, 32.

Mr. Off explained that on August 12th, his girlfriend, who had been his partner for about 3-4 months, had allegedly miscarried their child after she reportedly slipped and fell. He said that his girlfriend asked him to bury the stillborn fetus, so he decided to bury it in the early hours of the same day.

Upon inspection under the tree where Mr. Off said he buried the fetus, signs of recent burial were evident. Rescue workers and police then began excavating, and not long after they uncovered a cloth bundle containing a tiny fetus with an umbilical cord still attached. A preliminary investigation suggested that the fetus was likely no older than 3-4 months.

The police took the couple to the police station for an investigation.

In another incident, a scavenger came across a dead baby girl dumped at a garbage pile on South Pattaya Road. The police are still searching for the person who abandoned the child. These are two separate incidents.
