The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area of Phuket from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.

These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. We publish many stories daily and it is easy to lose track of important events or changes in our area. We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in Phuket province.

They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, August 7th, 2023, to Sunday, August 13th, 2023.

Let’s get started and see what the top local stories were!

1. An Egyptian man and a female Thai owner were arrested at a barber shop in Patong.

The Phuket Express notes that barbers and salon workers are a protected Thai occupation and foreigners cannot work in this field or obtain work permits to do so.

2. The Phuket Marine Office filed a report for legal action against a boat that released oil into the sea.

Anyone releasing oil into the sea can be imprisoned for up to three years or fined up to 60,000 baht or both. They must also pay the costs of cleaning up the damage caused by the released oil.

3. A woman was arrested after she allegedly opened an unlicensed massage shop without permission and allowed a minor to work.

The Patong Police told the Phuket Express that minors are not qualified to work at massage shops.

4. A 52-year-old German man drowned after he went swimming with his 11-year-old son at Karon Beach.

This is the sixth drowning on Phuket beaches in just a few weeks, five of them foreign tourists.

5. A British tourist called for help after a boat captain fell unconscious while they were in the sea together in Phang Nga.

A male British tourist had called for help and told tourist police about the problem at the hotline 1155.
