A woman has allegedly been attacked by her boyfriend in Chonburi who is a member of Parliament in Bangkok from the Move Forward Party .
The Borwin Police Deputy Chief Lieutenant Colonel Chiayaphon Nitayapat told the Pattaya News that an unidentified Bangkok woman, 26, filed a report with them on Wednesday (June 28th).
She told police that she has been in a relationship with her boyfriend, 27, for about a month. On June 23rd, 2023, they were in a car heading from Sri Racha to Pattaya. There was an intense verbal argument, the subject matter of which was not released, before he allegedly smacked her in the face and stopped the vehicle. A further tussel allegedly took place and according to the victim he took her mobile phone and threw it away into the street.
She wants legal action to be taken against him for assault. They will meet at the Borwin police station on July 2nd, 2023.
The name of the MP, despite widespread speculation on social media, has been withheld so far by Borwin police, citing wanting to hold an upcoming meeting first. Meanwhile, some politicians and critics online are urging the accused to publicly come forward, identify themselves, and address the allegations before the meeting with police.
The situation is complex as MFP is currently attempting to form a new Thai government and any potential scandals or problems can serve as a possible disruption towards this goal.
The Move Forward Party, or MFP, won the most seats in the recent Thai election that elected members of Parliament. The Thai government is set to elect a speaker of the House early next week but the entire selection process has been a rocky one with MFP and their coalition partner and second place party Pheu Thai not seeing eye to eye over which party should hold the speaker post.
After the speaker is elected, a vote for Prime Minister will take place but this is also a highly contentious vote and situation.
MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat is a frontrunner for the next Prime Minister role but has also had a number of problems plague his ambitions, most notably an ongoing investigation into if media shares he says he inherited disqualified him from becoming Prime Minister and if he knowingly ran for PM while understanding this was a disqualification.
This is not the first recent legal issue with a member of the Move Forward Party. In the middle of May a brand new MFP MP-elect was arrested for drunk driving after celebrating her victory in Bangkok. She agreed to resign from her position.
