1. Thai government announces 19th extension of Emergency Decree, effective until September

Another two-month extension of the emergency decree has been confirmed after the general meeting of the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), chaired by the Prime Minister, on Friday, despite the country approaching Covid-19 as an endemic disease and easing several preventive measures since the beginning of July. CCSA spokesperson Taweesilp also stressed that the extension is to prevent the spread of the disease and prevent loss and is not for other purposes or political matters, as claimed by several pro-democracy activists or oppositional MPs.

2. Thai PM expresses his deepest condolences over assassination death of former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe

The sudden news of the assassination death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had shocked people all over the world, including the Thai Prime Minister who had once welcomed him to Thailand in 2013. Abe was shot by a Japanese navy veteran who was arrested immediately at the scene. The former PM had been taken by helicopter to a hospital but sadly passed away after being unresponsive and from heart failure. He played an important role in strengthening relations between Japan and Thailand and was the first Japanese leader to visit Thailand in 11 years.

3. US Secretary Blinken arrives in Thailand to reaffirm the U.S.-Thai alliance

US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken arrived in Thailand on Saturday to strengthen U.S.-Thai relations. He and Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai also signed two MOUs to deepen alliances and advance the broadly shared prosperity between both countries in several aspects, including economic, law enforcement, climate, cyber security and technology, security, and health cooperation after the Covid-19 global pandemics.
