Mailbag/Opinion: Construction work on Soi 15 from Second Road to Soi Buakhao frustrates local residents

The following is based on multiple letters and feedback our team has gotten about construction work currently taking place on Soi 15, Second Road to Buakhao.

This road, which runs behind the Avenue Shopping Mall, contains several major condos, hotels, and apartment buildings especially popular with ex-pats.

The opinions of those expressing concern, as well as the cover photo, is their own. We have kept the names and identities of those writing us anonymous at their request.

The rains have come and more and more dirt has ended up on the side of the roadway on Soi 15 that they haven’t destroyed.   Now we have mud and in places, very thick mud that makes walking impossible and a motorbike ride an off-road experience.
This aspect of the disaster is totally preventable.   They have plenty of workers sitting around doing nothing most of the day.   Give them shovels and have them clear the roadway of mud to make it passable again. Make this a daily task and it won’t be as big a task as it is now that they’ve neglected it.   I grew up in a cold climate and after a snowfall, you had 24 hours to clear the sidewalk outside your house of snow or get fined.   Well, it’s time for this construction company to clear the road of the hazard they created.
If this project had been planned in a way to minimize the impact on residents they would have worked on a portion of it, dug the holes, laid the pipes, and restored the roadway before moving onto the next section.
This is what was done on Beach Road.     Their plan however is apparently to destroy the whole roadway and maybe then get around to putting in the pipes hopefully before the rainy season.  Residents are forced to dodge the heavy equipment that is constantly
moving back and forth on the soi.   Much of the time both ends of soi 15 are blocked between the Avenue shopping center and second road.

M-The current construction work on Soi 15, which has been going on for months, is unbearable. They continue to disrupt wi-fi and electric cables, the street is almost impassable at times, and residents are being forced to deal with it for months. Can we get a specific timeline for this project? I know TPN doesn’t do investigative reporting, but please see if you can get some coverage on the road conditions here. I’ve had little luck working with my condo on it.

L-I am moving out of my condo on Soi 15 soon due to the neverending construction, the road blocked with heavy equipment half the time, the noise, and overall issue. I understand what they are doing and why, but it’s a mess. Is there a timetable for this job?

EI-Please don’t print my full name. I am a resident of an apartment around Soi 15/Avenue and have made multiple complaints to City Hall (1337) and my own condo about the construction project on this road. Our juristic office is working with the company on what the plan is, but no luck yet. We understand the work needs to be done, but they have torn up the entire road basically at this point vs. section by a section which would make more sense. We hope you can shed a little light for those unaware of the construction work on this soi, hopefully pushing it to be done faster or in smaller sections.
TPN notes City officials have commented previously that they were aware of issues and blamed most of them on “contractor issues” and “Covid-19 restrictions related delays”. We will be looking to see if further comments will be addressed in the near future on the project and its status.
