Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Birthday to Her Majesty the Queen Mother in Thailand

In Thailand, Mother’s Day is celebrated annually on August 12 as it is the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, who is also regarded as the mother of all Thai people.

Born on August 12, 1932, Mom Rajawongse (MR) Sirikit Kitiyakara was the eldest daughter of Prince Nakhatra Mongkol Kitiyakara and Mom Luang Bua Snidwongse. She began her formal education in Bangkok during the start of World War II.

After the war ended, MR Sirikit moved to the United Kingdom as her father was appointed as an ambassador to the Court of St. James’s. During her study in Europe, she met His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was studying in Switzerland, and eventually began a romantic relationship.

Their royal engagement was announced in 1949 and the royal wedding was organized in the following year on April 28, one week before His Majesty King Bhumibol’s coronation ceremony.

During the reign of His Majesty King Bhumibol, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit was always seen by his side while he was working royal duties across Thailand. She had captured the heart of Thai people through her devotion and her compassion and had always been a symbol of hope and encouragement for the country.

To celebrate Mother’s Day in Thailand, Thai people will raise national flags and The Queen Mother’s personal flag and decorate their places with the portrait of The Queen Mother as it is their way of expressing their loyalty and honor to her.

Children traditionally give their mother jasmine flowers which symbolize motherhood and unconditional love. Most Thai schools will host a Mother’s Day ceremony for their students to pay respect and thank their beloved mothers for everything they have done.

Some families will reunite and take their elderly mothers for dinner. It is also a perfect occasion for everyone in the family to meet and enjoy their time together.

From the staff of The Pattaya News Long live the Queen Mother, Happy Birthday and Happy Mother’s Day.
