Burmese “friends” stab each other while drinking in Pattaya, one killed while the other flees

Pattaya —

Two Burmese “friends” got into a verbal dispute while drinking, which reportedly escalated into a gruesome stabbing, leaving one dead while the other was still on the run. The fleeing suspect claimed via a phone call that his deceased friend threatened to kill him first.

The stabbing took place yesterday, August 1st, when Pol. Lt. Siriyaporn Kongpetchak was notified of a critically injured man who reportedly got stabbed near his heart in Soi Thung Klom-Tan Man in the Nongprue subdistrict around 9 PM.

The victim was a 45-year-old Burmese man named Phol Chantra. He sustained multiple stabbing wounds to his body including one to his throat, two to the center of his chest, and one slightly below his left chest, causing him to lose a large amount of blood and went unconscious. Phol, who was also granted Thai nationality, was rushed to Pattaya Hospital in the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation’s ambulance but sadly passed away later in the hospital.

The victim’s friend Mongkol Thirat, 47, who tried to take Phol to hospital on a motorbike earlier, stated that Phol made his living by selling oil to ferry operators in Koh Larn. Yesterday (August 1st), Phol and the suspect, Weera Boonmee, 47, who happened to allegedly be his Burmese friend, drank rice whiskey together startinf at noon and got into a verbal fight about money that Weera had allegedly borrowed from Phol.

Mongkol (the witness) carried on that a verbal fight escalated into a gruesome stabbing between the two friends, causing Phol to come running at him yelling, “Go go, I got stabbed.” Mongkol then tried to take the victim to a hospital on his motorbike, but the victim lost consciousness, so he stopped midway to call for police instead. According to reports, Weera after stabbing Phol escaped immediately and remained at large, as of press time.

Another witness, Jeed (real name withheld due to his privacy), who claimed that he knew the victim and the suspect, said that he called the suspect immediately after being told about the incident. Jeed said he shortly talked with Weera, who allegedly stabbed Phol multiple times, on a phone call, and Weera claimed that Phol threatened to kill him first if he could not return the money he borrowed, so he had to stab him.

Pol Col. Damrong Iampairote, police chief of the Nongprue Police Station, revealed that the Burmese suspect is still hiding in Pattaya based on his phone signal that was last detected in Soi Chaiyapruek, 4 kilometers away from the crime scene in Soi Thung Klom-Tan Man. The officer stated he would issue an arrest warrant soon if the suspect did not surrender.
