Prachuap Khiri Khan –
A family from Pranburi District, Prachuap Khiri Khan, has earned more than 500 baht a day during the Covid-19 financial crisis from catching cicada embryos to cook them as a snack for sales.
Villager Phisut Baowkot, 32, revealed that cicada embryos can be collected only once within a three months period. Cicadas would appear from the ground to slough themselves off on the trees or on 30-to-50-centimeter tall grass. They would leave for mating after the slough.
Phisut said: “The insects would appear in the evening and night, around 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Their wings would become very strong after the slough, allowing them to fly really fast and making it more difficult for us to catch.”
Each night, his family could catch more than three kilograms of the sloughed cicadas. Some will be fried and seasoned with salt. Some will be stir-fried with spicy seasoning or roasted. The dishes will be sold for 250 baht per kilogram to the merchants in the Pranburi market.
The 32-year-old local father stated that the job crucially helped alleviate the financial burden in the family. It was an extra income after working hours on a farm and losing income due to Covid-19 previously. He said the cicadas are selling very well although admitted they aren’t a hit with most foreigners.
