Bangkok –
Spraying disinfectant at the Thailand-Myanmar borders is to effectively sterilize the area after it was set up as temporary detention for several groups of Myanmar refugees, the Royal Thai Army claimed to the press today, April 15th.
Deputy spokeswoman Sirichan Ngathong said the Royal Thai Army has responded to recent criticism on social media, claiming that the disinfectant on the borders is not worth the cost and not effective.
The Department said that the disinfectant took place after a large number of Myanmar refugees who have temporarily escaped to the border due to an internal political conflict have returned to their mainland.
Border forces then, according to Sirichan, complied with Public Health measures to maintain safety and to control the spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus on the border by cleaning and spraying disinfectant to prevent any diseases that may possibly be contagious from the refugees.
The deputy spokesperson said: “The military force had requested support and pieces of equipment for disinfectant from the Ministry of Public Health. It is to efficiently use the existing government equipment for the benefit of the people.”
“More importantly, the disinfectant is to build confidence among local people before they could return to the area and do their daily activities for work, such as growing crops or foraging for food,” Sirichan concluded.
As of now, the military force, volunteers, and local people have been spraying disinfectants to prevent the domestic spread of the virus in several public areas and communities, such as schools, temples, markets, bus stations, etc. About 268 areas and 162 schools have been sterilized since January 17, Sirichan concluded.
Social media comments, The Pattaya News notes, are still overwhelmingly negative towards disinfecting in forested areas.
