Chonburi-
Twenty gamblers have been arrested over alleged offenses to the Thai emergency decree to control the Covid-19 coronavirus in Mueang Chonburi.
The Sane Suk Police was notified of the alleged gambling offenses via a LINE official application set up by Thai law enforcement and the Thai police website ‘Gambling Report’ over this last weekend ending February 21st, 2021.
A tip sent to police came in from what was described as a “concerned citizen” afraid of the potential spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.
Police, responding to the tip, raided a hut in a mango plantation on Yota Thikan Road in the Mueang sub-district.
Twenty gamblers had reportedly been arrested while they were playing illegal gambling games.
They are facing charges of illegal gambling and gathering in a small place which offends the emergency decree to control the Covid-19 Coronavirus that is currently in effect in Thailand.
Penalties for the violation of this law, in effect due to the Covid-19 situation in Thailand, are strict with high fines and potential jail time. Thai authorities, especially in Chonburi, have been cracking down on gambling for weeks after it was stated as a primary reason for recent clusters of Covid-19 that broke out in the Eastern provinces of Thailand.
