At 3:00 AM, on November 28th, 2023, the Chiang Mai Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation officers received a fire report at 100-year-old commercial buildings in the Warorot market, Mueang Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai rescue teams and more than 10 firetrucks were dispatched to the incident scene to control the flames on 2-story concrete buildings. An adjacent 6 buildings were engulfed in flames as a result.
Initially, there was no report of casualties or injuries. The firefighters were able to control the fires after 2 hours.
However, relevant agencies would conduct further investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident. It was reported that the estimated damage from the incident exceeded 100 million baht.
This incident occurred the night of the lantern festival in Chiang Mai where it was technically prohibited to float lanterns in the old city.
