Following the national senate election held on June 26th, 2024, by the Election Commission (EC), Mr. Sawang Boonmee, the Secretary-General of the EC and Director of the National Election, announced the vote count results.
The election involved 20 groups, with the top 15 candidates from each group ranked according to their votes. The top 10 candidates from each group were elected as national senators, while those ranked 11th to 15th were designated as reserve senators, totaling 300 individuals.
At 10:00 AM, on June 27th, 2024, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin commented on the overall senate election results, including the surprising loss of prominent figures like former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.
Srettha stated that he was not worried, as he is part of the Administrative Division and does not interfere with the Legal Affairs Division.
Regarding the perception that influential local figures from each province were elected as senators, Srettha clarified that he has no opinion on the matter. He emphasized that his role is within the Administrative Division and assured that those elected have been vetted by the EC.
When asked if potential complaints could delay the senate election process, Srettha said that verification must be fair to all parties, including elected, reserve, and unsuccessful candidates. He expressed confidence that the system had been well-designed to meet the July 2nd, 2024 deadline set by the EC.
The Election Commission themselves were reportedly overall pleased with the election and were reviewing just under fifty complaints as of press time.
