The Myanmar soldiers from the 275th Infantry Battalion who had been scattered near the Second Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge have retreated back to their base at Pha Song Camp in Myawaddy on Wednesday afternoon, after the withdrawal of the ethnic Karen resistance fighters that overran the base earlier this month.
According to reports, preparations have been made at Pha Song Camp to accommodate the returning troops, and the Myanmar national flag has been raised at the 275th Infantry Battalion base, replacing the Karen flag. This comes after the anti-junta forces raised the Karen flag in place of the Myanmar national flag after capturing the 275th Infantry Battalion base a few days ago.
The Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) reportedly decided to withdraw its troops to minimize civilian casualties and create a safe zone in Myawaddy Township.
However, clashes between the Myanmar military and resistance forces continued in several waves in the inner areas of Myanmar on the same day. Meanwhile, displaced Myanmar civilians who had fled to Mae Sot in Thailand’s Tak province, are returning to their homes in Myanmar.
