Injured Dolphin Sparks Concern in Sattahip

Sattahip —

An injured dolphin was spotted in the waters off Koh Phra near Laem Thian Pier in Sattahip, Chonburi, early Wednesday morning, April 24th.

Local residents alerted the Sawang Rojanathamtham Rescue Foundation after noticing the wounded dolphin, which is about 1 meter long, struggling in the water near the Sattahip Naval Base. They believed the animal may have strayed from its group and sustained injuries from something.

The dolphin’s condition raised concerns among Sattahip residents after its story was posted on social media. Most people worried about its survival if it did not receive immediate assistance. The area, in which the dolphin was found, is also frequented by naval vessels and fishing boats, further fueling concerns that the dolphin would get hit and killed.

Mr. Pichit Kliegkutan, the head of a rescue unit, told local reporters that a rescue boat was dispatched to investigate, and they found a dolphin of unknown gender with black skin and visible marks resembling wounds. The dolphin would dive underwater when a boat approached, meaning that it was in fear and distress, Mr. Pichit explained. This made it difficult for the team to determine the extent of its injuries or illness as of press time.

Mr. Wuthipong Wongin, Director of the Marine Resources Conservation Division at Marine and Coastal Resources Office 2, revealed that relevant agencies and a veterinary team had already boarded a boat to examine the dolphin for injuries or illness on Wednesday afternoon.

Based on photographs, Mr. Wuthipong believed that the dolphin is a rough-toothed dolphin, about 1-2 years old. Authorities are closely monitoring the dolphin at the time of reporting.
