Pattaya —

A motorbike taxi driver, better known in Thailand as a “Win,” fought with an Indian tourist in Pattaya on Thursday of last week after the 7-year-old son of the driver splashed water at the tourist and angered him.

The tense encounter took place on Pattaya Second Road leading to Khao Phra Tamnak around 7 PM on April 18th, 2024. The incident, captured on video, showed the Thai driver chasing and confronting the tourist of Indian descent during Songkran celebrations.

The video also depicted the driver attempting to strike the tourist. Fortunately, the incident ended as bystanders intervened and separated the two parties. The disagreement then went viral on social media, with most netizens criticizing the motorbike taxi driver for damaging Pattaya’s reputation by hurting the visitor.

Following the incident, the Win driver in the video clip, whose name was revealed only as Mr. Boom, gave an interview with local media, defending his actions. The 34-year-old man claimed that he did not attack the tourist but, in fact, was just protecting his son from the tourist.

Mr. Boom explained that his 7-year-old son was playing water nearby when the son splashed water at the passing tourist. This enraged the man, who then allegedly tried to grab his son’s arm, prompting him to get involved and chasing after the tourist as seen in the one-minute footage.

Mr. Boom expressed regret for the incident but maintained that he would not apologize for defending his child. He also stated that the tourist did not understand that water splashing was a major part of Songkran.

As of press time, no formal complaint has been filed by the Indian tourist. Nevertheless, Pattaya police have taken notice of the incident and are investigating the matter further.
