Chachoengsao —

A van carrying a large group of Sattahip navy conscripts who were travelling back to their hometown for Songkran crashed into a trailer truck, killing two officers and injuring over 13 others.

The tragedy took place on April 4th, 2024, on Highway 304 in Phanom Sarakham district, Chachoengsao province. Police and rescue workers were notified of the accident around 4:30 AM and rushed to the scene.

Upon their arrival, authorities found a white van overturned in the middle of the road. Around 10 passengers were thrown out of the vehicle. Three of them were seriously injured.

It was reported that the van was traveling from Sattahip Naval Base in Chonburi province to the conscripts’ home province of Nong Bua Lamphu. The van then crashed into an 18-wheel trailer truck. The driver of the trailer truck was not injured.

Rescue workers rushed the injured passengers to nearby hospitals. Two of the conscripts, whose names were not released to the media, were pronounced dead, one at the scene of the accident and one at the hospital. The other 13 passengers were being treated for various injuries as of press time.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident but currently speculated that the driver of the van might have fallen asleep at the wheel.
