The Thai government has announced a minimum wage increase for hotel workers in 10 popular tourist destinations, effective April 13th, 2024. The new daily minimum wage for these workers will be 400 baht, up from the current range of 328 to 354 baht depending on the area.
According to the official release, the Wage Committee made the decision to support the tourism sector, which is a key driver of the Thai economy.
The 10 provinces to receive the raise are:
- Bangkok (Pathumwan and Watthana districts)
- Krabi (Ao Nang Sub-District Administrative Organization)
- Chonburi (Pattaya City)
- Chiang Mai (Chiang Mai Municipality)
- Prachuap Khiri Khan (Hin Municipality)
- Phang Nga (Khukkhak Sub-District Municipality)
- Phuket (entire province)
- Rayong (Ban Phe Sub-district)
- Songkhla (Hat Yai Municipality)
- Surat Thani (Koh Samui District)
The Wage Committee noted that the tourism industry has been expanding rapidly and that the 10 selected provinces generate significant revenue from tourism. The increase in the minimum wage is expected to boost the purchasing power of hotel workers and stimulate the local economy.
