Kanchanaburi—
At 6:00 AM, on March 21st, 2024, Thong Pha Phum police received a report from an anonymous source that a large number of immigrants would illegally cross the Thai border by boats in Vajiralongkorn Reservoir, Thong Pha Phum, Kanchanaburi.
The Thong Pha Phum patrol rangers and relevant agencies inspected the reported area and discovered scattered human footprints heading deep into the forest. The officers followed the tracks and found a large number of illegal Burmese immigrants hiding within a hilly forest on the side of the road.
The officers then secured the area and entrapped the illegal immigrants. As a result, 62 Burmese individuals were taken into custody.
Upon further police interrogation, the Burmese immigrants told the police that they paid an agent 15,000 to 25,000 baht per person to seek jobs in central Thailand illegally. The police would investigate further to find involved individuals in illegal foreign immigration smuggling to Thailand.
Initially, the police escorted them to the Thong Pha Phum inquiry police station for further legal processing.
Due to a recent mandatory conscription policy in Myanmar, which is embroiled in conflicts between the military junta and multiple groups, many Myanmar citizens are attempting to flee to Thailand through both legal and illegal means as we reported here.
