Pattaya —

Over 200 business owners on Jomtien Beach Road in Pattaya have petitioned the deputy mayor to scrap a one-way traffic rule on Jomtien Beach Road.

The petition, which was filed on Wednesday, March 20th, follows Pattaya City’s decision to implement a one-way rule to facilitate the drainage system upgrading project near Jomtien Beach to tackle flooding.

The project involves roadside excavation for laying HDPE drainage pipes, installing underground electrical systems, road resurfacing, and lighting improvements. The one-way rule went into effect on March 1, stretching from Jomtien Beach Road from Dongtan Curve to Chaiyapruek Intersection. The budget was around 500-600 million baht.

On Wednesday, over 200 business owners, who gathered at a restaurant on Jomtien Beach, submitted a petition to Deputy Mayor Kritsana Boonsawat, urging the city to cancel the multi-kilometer one-way rule.

One operator pointed out that although the project initially received wide public support due to its clear goals, the one-way change has reportedly caused a severe drop in sales for businesses along Jomtien Beach. Additionally there is no current road construction so the restriction seems nonsensical. Many motorists continue to be concerned and the change has caused regular traffic backups on side streets, especially Chaiyapreuk.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Kritsana acknowledged the concerns and pledged to bring the matter before the Pattaya City administration for urgent consideration. A decision will be reached following an upcoming meeting, Mr. Kritsana said.
