Royal Thai Army Disciplines Soldier for Motorway Gun Threat Incident

On March 15th, 2024, Thai social media users posted a video of a man in an army uniform using a firearm to threaten another party on a motorway as they previously had a conflict on the road. The video then went viral.

Recently, on March 17th, 2024, Lit. Gen. Theeraphong Pathamasingh Na Ayutthaya, the spokesperson of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, publicly revealed after the investigation of the man in the video who indeed was under the supervision of the Royal Thai Army. The man in question had his name withheld by the Royal Thai Army, however.

The Administrative Department was ordered to take the man in question in custody and an investigative committee was appointed to issue discipline to him. Furthermore, the army would investigate the case that he allegedly carried a firearm to a public area.

According to the spokesperson of the Royal Thai Army, the investigative committee considered the following discipline.

  1. The man in question would be detained for 21 days.
  2. Considering withholding his 2024 pension. The man in question will be retired in October 2024.
  3. The man in question would receive military discipline for 15 days.
  4. Revoking his permission to possess firearms for his inappropriate behavior.

However, the man in question reportedly confessed his wrongdoings and repented his hot-headed acts. He also publicly apologized to the victim who was threatened, said the spokesperson of the Royal Thai Army.

The Royal Thai Army asserted that the prompt investigation was just and fair to all parties. Moreover, all unit commanders must strictly discipline their subordinates so that future incidents would not repeat, remarked the spokesperson of the Royal Thai Army.
