Former PM Somchai Wongsawat Hosts Lavish Welcome Party for Thaksin Shinawatra’s Return to Chiang Mai

On March 15th, 2024, Thai national media reported that Mr. Somchai Wongsawat, the former Thai Prime Minister in 2008, hosted a welcome party for Thaksin Shinawatra at the Green Valley Village, Mae Rim, Chiang Mai.

At 5:30 PM, Thai ministers and Pheu Thai Party members participated in the party. The Thai ministers included Deputy Minister of the Interior Kriang Kaltinan, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Thammanat Prompao, and other ministers from the Pheu Thai Party.

At 6:20 PM, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin also participated in the party and sat by Thaksin’s right side at the dinner table. To Thaksin’s left was Somchai, according to Thai national media.

According to Thai national media, Somchai gave a brief speech to welcome Thaksin’s return to Thailand. Chiang Mai and Thai people were delighted for today’s reunion. Thai people missed Thaksin when he was gone and felt warm when he was in Thailand, Somchai said during his speech.

After the speech, more than 100 Thai traditional dancers displayed a gorgeous performance at the welcome party to former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s return to Chiang Mai after 17 years, according to Thai national media.

Thaksin is currently on probation but was granted special permission as we reported here to visit Chiang Mai.
