Thaksin Shinawatra’s Return Planned to Chiang Mai After 17 Years, Amidst PM’s Scheduled Visit


On March 7th, 2024, Thai national media reported after Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra publicly revealed Thaksin Shinawatra’s itinerary from March 14th to 16th to his hometown, Chiang Mai.

According to Thai national media, Thaksin had an itinerary released to Chiang Mai on March 14th, traveling by a private jet. The destination was a residence at Summit Green Valley in Mae Rim, Chiang Mai.

The stated purpose of his visit was to pay respect to his family ancestors at a temple in San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai. This visit to Chiang Mai will be his first time after being a fugitive abroad for 17 years, according to Thai national media.

It was reported that his relatives and close friends would meet with Thaksin during his visit to Chiang Mai.

However, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin had also scheduled to visit Chiang Mai on March 15th to perform a governmental inspection and follow up on the PM 2.5 problems that caused concerns among Thais and foreigners. After that, on March 18th, Srettha will visit Phayao to attend a Thai cabinet meeting.
