Pattaya —

Pattaya’s tourism industry is experiencing a surge in the number of Chinese tourists following the implementation of the free Thai-China visa policy, according to Mr. Boonkerd Suksrikan, Vice President of the Eastern Thai Hotels Association.

Mr. Boonkerd revealed that there is a significant rise in hotel bookings by Chinese tourists, particularly for stays extending into April, the month of Thailand’s word-famous Songkran water festival.

This surge is attributed to the Thai government’s support for the festival, which could potentially see the festivities lasting throughout the month. The free Thai-China visa policy, implemented on March 1st, allows Chinese citizens to stay within Thailand for up to 30 days per visit, with a cumulative stay not more than 90 days but within 180 days.

Mr. Boonkerd stated that Pattaya’s tourism situation immediately improved after the Thai government launched the free visa program, with hotel bookings, especially from Chinese tourists, experiencing a noticeable increase. Most bookings involve family and group accommodations, and this trend is expected to continue through March and April, Mr. Boonkerd added.

The vice president emphasized Pattaya’s popularity among Chinese tourists, who according to him, often seek affordable accommodations. “The influx is attributed not only to the relaxed visa policy but also to the tourists’ desire to participate in the Songkran celebrations,” Mr. Boonkerd concluded.
