Pattaya —
A Thai woman in Pattaya alleged that she was injured by a foreign man who threw a glass at her following a dispute involving a barking dog. However, the foreigner later apologized to the victim and agreed to pay for her medical bills.
According to Thai media reports, Ms. Amawalee Tongfark, 37, was sitting at a cafe by the seaside of Jomtien Beach with a friend and their dog when a foreign couple at the next table became agitated by the barking. The situation escalated when the foreign man allegedly threw a glass towards Ms. Amawalee, causing injuries to her arm.
The incident first came to light when Ms. Amawalee took the incident to her social media account, describing that the incident happened on March 1st, 2024. Ms. Amawalee said she confronted the couple, questioning their actions. The couple reportedly responded with “I don’t care” and attempted to leave the scene.
Ms. Amawalee clarified that the dog did not belong to her and that the cafe was pet-friendly. She requested the couple to remain until the police arrived; however, they disregarded her request and reportedly attempted to flee.
Ms. Amawalee added that the couple sarcastically offered her money for the injuries but she refused due to their alleged insincere demeanors.
Security guards at the scene intervened to prevent the couple from leaving, but they were unsuccessful. Ms. Amawalee reported that the foreign couple, who she said might be British and Thai, eventually escaped in a car with three other individuals.
After the incident received media attention, the suspect, identified by Na Jomtien Police only as 60-year-old British national Mr. Sam, reported himself to a local police station on March 3rd.
Mr. Sam reportedly admitted to the incident, alleging he took legal over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs before the incident for a toothache, and it made him feel not like himself. He also claimed he could not remember the incident well due to the drugs’ effect.
Mr. Sam negotiated with Ms. Amawalee and agreed to compensate her 18,000 baht for medical expenses. He expressed remorse and also apologized to the public through the press, affirming his love for Thailand and promising he will never commit such actions again.
Pol. Col. Wattanachai Saengrit, chief of the Na Jomtien Police Station, stated that anyone who intentionally commits an act that causes harm to others physically or mentally is liable to imprisonment for not more than one month or a fine not exceeding 10,000 baht. However, since Mr. Sam could reach a solution with Ms. Amawalee, he only had to pay the fine before being released.
