Swiss Cyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run in Na Jomtien, Driver Surrenders

A 73-year-old Swiss cyclist lost his life in a tragic hit-and-run incident in Na Jomtien, Sri Racha district, Chonburi province, on February 25th, 2024. The driver later surrendered to the police.

Ernst Frei, the victim, was fatally struck by a speeding sedan on Sukhumvit Road near the Caltex gas station and succumbed to his injuries at the accident site. According to eyewitnesses, the involved vehicle immediately fled the scene after the collision.

Na Jomtien police found at the accident site Frei’s damaged bicycle. Despite the immediate response of paramedics, Frei’s severe head injuries proved fatal.

On the following morning of the accident, February 26th, 49-year-old Ms. Saranya Klansook voluntarily surrendered to the Na Jomtien Police. The Thai woman arrived in her red Mazda sedan, which according to police, displayed a damaged windshield consistent with the accident. She admitted her involvement in the tragic event during questioning, Na Jomtien police reported.

According to Ms. Saranya, she unintentionally collided with Mr. Frei while returning home from Pattaya. She initially fled the scene because she was shocked but later made the decision to turn herself in.

Authorities are looking into the specifics of the incident, with Police Investigator Pol. Maj. Col. Suphan Sophee anticipating charges for reckless driving resulting in the death of Mr. Frei against Ms. Saranya.
