The House of Representatives has held an urgent motion regarding the review of measures to ensure the safety of motorcades for members of the Thai Royal Household.
The move came after an incident on February 4th, which saw disturbances to a royal motorcade, causing distress among the Thai people.
Akanat Promphan, a Party-list MP from the United Thai Nation Party, who proposed the motion, pointed out that the motorcade that day did not interfere with road traffic. However, it appeared that a vehicle tried to chase the motorcade at high speed, revealing the perpetrator’s unkind intentions. He, thus, proposed a review of various regulations and plans for ensuring the safety of the motorcade.
Jurin Laksanawisit, a Party-list MP from the Democrat Party, who co-proposed the motion, urged the government to be aware of its duty to provide safety for the members of the Royal family as defined by law.
Jurin strongly suggested that the administration must not support amnesty for offenses under Section 112, better known as the lesé majesté law. He deemed that revising the law would not only trigger new conflicts in the future but also promote further violations of this section.
Jurin also advised the government to consider whether it is appropriate to amend the 2017 Royal Security Act, including specifying penalties specifically for those who violate this act.
