Suvarnabhumi Airport Prepares for Uptick in Chinese New Year Tourists, Anticipates Over 2.3 Million Travelers

On February 1st, 2024, Thai national media reported that Mr. Kittipong Kittikachorn, the Suvarnabhumi Director of The Airports of Thailand (AoT), estimated an increasing number of tourists during the Chinese New Year Festival between 4 – 16 February 2024, would reach 2,366,940.

The number included international and domestic flights of 1,949,564 and 417,376 respectively or 32.73% higher compared to the previous Chinese New Year celebration. It was estimated that there would be 12,883 flights divided into international and domestic flights of 9,878 and 3,005 respectively or 19.99% higher compared to the previous year.

In response to the Thai Ministry of Transport’s policy “Convenient and Safe Transportation, Good Service Minds,” the Suvarnabhumi Director stated that Suvarnabhumi Airport prepared Chinese interpreters to support the government and airlines. Furthermore, souvenir shops and restaurants use the Chinese languages of Mandarin and Cantonese to facilitate Chinese tourists across various services.

Suvarnabhumi Airport also publicized to all passengers about the Common Use Self Service (CUSS), a self-check-in system, and Common Use Bag Drop (CUBD), a self-luggage loading system, the Suvarnabhumi Director added.

To further facilitate incoming tourists, there is an application called SAWASDEE by AOT which provides info on services at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Airlines would have check-in counter services available in large numbers to meet the demand of the surging tourists and passengers can load their luggage up to four hours in advance, remarked the Suvarnabhumi Director.

All passengers may choose to use public transportation linked to Suvarnabhumi Airport in various ways such as taxis, Airport Rail Links, buses, and airport private limousines, the Suvarnabhumi Director stated.

Recently, the Thai government officially announced an agreement on reciprocal permanently waiving visas for Thai and Chinese tourists effective on March 1st, 2024.

A surging number of Chinese tourists is estimated to take place and Suvarnabhumi Airport is ready to provide services to all passengers to boost Thailand’s tourism and aviation industries further, concluded the Suvarnabhumi Director.
