Thai Airports Set for Major Upgrade: Six Key Locations Target Global Top 50 Ranking Within Two Years

On January 18th, 2024, Pol. Gen. Wisanu Prasatthong-osot, the new president of Airports of Thailand Co Ltd., publicly revealed an expansion of capacity to raise the standard of Thai airports in six locations.

They were Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, and Mae Fah Luang (Chiang Rai) airports.

New policies were given to enhance the quality and the standard of Thai airports which facilitate passengers with trained airport staff officers and high-end technologies, said Pol. Gen. Wisanu.

Pol. Gen. Wisanu aimed to make Thai airports a regional air transport hub and to improve their global ranking level in the future, aiming to rank between 1 to 50 in two years. Currently, Thai airports are ranked 77th globally.

Furthermore, it was planned to reduce traffic congestion in passenger pick-up and drop-off areas, especially at Suvarnabhumi airport, and new areas would be assigned as temporary parking lots that would be free for up to 30 minutes. The proposal would be concrete in a few months, said Pol. Gen. Wisanu.
