Chonburi Serial Power Line Thief Apprehended Again After Being Released on Bail

Pattaya —

Early on Tuesday morning, highway police in Chonburi apprehended a suspect believed to be planning another power line theft on the Pattaya-Sattahip motorway.

A video version of this story can be found here on our YouTube.

CCTV cameras, positioned near kilometer marker 135+100 in Huay Yai sub-district, captured footage of three suspicious individuals parking their motorcycles along the motorway around 2:30 AM. This location was the scene of an infamous cable theft in September 2023, where thieves caused millions of baht in damage by cutting power lines.

Through the footage, authorities quickly identified one of the suspects as Mr. Anulak Obchu, 35. The Thai man had been arrested by highway police in September 2023 for the previous incident. Despite being released on bail, Mr. Anulak’s presence at the scene raised concerns that he might be planning to commit a repeat offense.

Subsequently, police officers found Mr. Anulak riding a motorcycle in Huai Yai and brought him in for questioning. Mr. Anulak claimed that he was having a joyride when he was caught on cameras, but his suspicious demeanor and the way he parked his bike close to the control panel led the police to believe that he was planning another cable theft.

A urine test also revealed traces of drug use in Mr. Anulak’s system. Additionally, a background check revealed that he was wanted on multiple warrants issued by the Pattaya Provincial Court, including charges related to skipping court hearings, drug possession, armed robbery, and theft.

Mr. Anulak is currently in police custody and will face legal proceedings regarding his drug use. The highway police urged motorists to alert authorities to any suspicious activity along the motorway.
