Ang Thong —

A dump truck caused the collapse of an entire pedestrian bridge in the Ang Thong province on Sunday when its body, which went up by accident, collided with the structure.

The accident occurred on January 7th, 2024, on Highway 32 in the Chairi sub-district of the Mueang district. While no injuries were reported, the collapsed bridge blocked a main highway, also known as the Asian Highway, to the North of Thailand, forcing authorities to divert traffic.

According to reports, the collision involved a dump truck, which crashed into the pedestrian bridge, causing it to fall onto the road below and blocking all four traffic lanes. Due to the bridge obstruction, traffic heading north was diverted to alternative routes, while mobile cranes were deployed to remove the wreckage.

Mr. Adirek Chuenphon, the 55-year-old truck driver involved in the accident, shared his account to Ang Thong authorities. He explained that after unloading construction materials in Bang Pa-in district, Ayutthaya province, he was on his way back to his office in the Nakhon Sawan province.

While driving, Mr. Adirek suddenly heard a loud noise and felt a jolt. This was caused by what he called the unexpected and unintentional lifting of the trailer, resulting in a collision with the pedestrian bridge overhead. Authorities are still investigating why the truck’s body suddenly went up as of press time.
