Thai Government Addresses Yellow Line Electric Train Incident: Ensures Public Safety and Investigates Cause

Samut Prakan

On January 3rd, 2024, Mr. Chai Watcharong, the Thai Government spokesman, publicly gave an update on the Yellow Line electric train incident where a dislodged wheel hit a taxi on Theparak Road, Samut Prakan.

Upon learning the news, Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, the Thai Minister of Transport, promptly inspected the scene and conducted an initial investigation, ensuring the cause was thoroughly examined.

Initial inquiries made to EBM, the concessionaire of the Yellow Line, revealed that the incident stemmed from a broken wheel bearing socket, leading to the dislodged wheel. Presently, the Yellow Line has undergone maintenance, however, the train itself remains unaffected and can operate normally, said Chai.
The Government Spokesperson emphasized that the Thai Transport Minister had summoned EBM to elucidate the cause of the incident and engaged in discussions regarding penalties.

The EBM was facing a disqualification for the next concession as the Thai Transport Minister prepared to enforce penalty rules, remarked Chai.
“The Thai government puts a high priority on public transportation safety, this marked the first incident involving a dislodged train wheel. However, the train’s technological systems meet international standards. The relevant agencies would thoroughly investigate and elucidate the cause to reassure the public trust,” concluded Chai.

This incident happened only about one week after another electric train rail incident, this one the pink line, when a large section of rail fell before dawn and damaged a significant amount of cars and property. Luckily, nobody was injured.
