On December 26th, 2023, Mr. Srettha Thavisin, the Thai Prime Minister, publicly revealed after the Thai cabinet meeting regarding the raise of minimum wages from 2 to 16 baht per day.
It was reported that further tripartite committee meetings would be held to discuss the rise of minimum wages in January and March of 2024, respectively, as it needed to be at an appropriate level. The minimum rate will be increased by 2 to 16 baht per day or 2.37% within 2024.
According to a report by Thai media, Phuket province had the highest minimum wage of 370 baht per day, and three southern border provinces, Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala, had the lowest minimum wage of 330 baht per day. After the Thai cabinet approves, the Royal Thai Gazette will announce it to be effective from January 1st, 2024.
However, Mr. Phipat Ratchakitprakarn, the Thai Minister of Labor, publicly stated that the tripartite committee would be arranged to study the raise of minimum wages at the district, sub-district, and municipal levels as each area has distinct economic conditions such as Pattaya and Hat Yai.
The relevant agencies would consider the information in each area and potentially raise the minimum wages again in March 2024 as a present to the Thai people in the Songkran celebration, remarked the Thai Minister of Labor.
