Pattaya Entertainment Sector Set to Celebrate New Year Overnight Until 6 AM

Pattaya —

Bars and clubs in Pattaya are set to celebrate the New Year with extended operating hours until 6 AM on January 1st, 2024, following the recent decision of the Thai Cabinet.

On Tuesday, November 28th, the Thai Cabinet officially approved the extension of the operating hours for entertainment establishments located in Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui, aiming to stimulate tourism and the economy.

Under the approved extension, approved entertainment venues in these areas are permitted to operate until 4 AM from December 15th. However, on December 31st, 2023, approved venues in Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui will also be allowed to operate until 6 AM on January 1st, 2024, to provide extra time for New Year celebrations.

Mr. Boonanan Pattanasin, President of the Pattaya Business and Tourism Association, expressed his support for the extended entertainment hours, citing the economic benefits it brings to the sector. He also highlighted the potential increase in spending by tourists and locals alike.

Mr. Pattanasin acknowledged the need for effective security measures, noise control, and law enforcement supervision regarding issues such as illegal drugs and weapons to ensure that the extended operating hours are managed responsibly and contribute positively to Pattaya’s nightlife.

He also stated that an occasional relaxation of overnight New Year celebrations is always welcomed and urged partygoers to take responsibility for themselves when drinking and to refrain from driving if under the influence of alcohol.

Meanwhile, a number of Pattaya tourism operators have voiced their concerns over the idea of allowing nighttime venues on Beach Road to operate until 4 AM.

Citing concerns about noise pollution, safety, and the overall impact on the city’s family friendly tourism image, the critics argued that late-night hours should be applied specifically only to establishments on Walking Street, the city’s legal nightlife area, and not Beach Road or other parts of Pattaya due to its mix of family-friendly establishments and residential areas.

As of press time, Pattaya City officials had not made a final decision where the extended operating hours would apply to or if the extended New Year’s hours would only be certain zones and areas, such as Walking Street, versus the entire city.
