Pattaya to Host Asian Sailing Championships & Olympic Qualifier for Paris 2024 in December

The Asian Sailing Championships & Asian Continental Olympic Qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place from December 10th to the 20th, 2023, in Pattaya. The event is a collaborative effort between the Thai Sailing Association, the Royal Thai Navy, the City of Pattaya, and the Sports Association of Chonburi province.

The competition was formally announced at a joint press conference held on November 23rd at Pattaya City Hall. Gracing the attendance were Chonburi governor Thawatchai Srithong, Admiral Somprasong Nilsamai, President of the Thai Sailing Association, Sontaya Khunpluem, President of the Sports Association of Chonburi province, and Poramase Ngampiches, Mayor of Pattaya City.

The competition is a result of Thailand being entrusted by the World Sailing Federation and the Asian Sailing Federation to host the selection trials for Asian athletes to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The championships will be held from December 10th to the 20th, 2023, at the sea in front of Khao Phra Tamnak and Jomtien Beach in Pattaya, Chonburi.

The competition will feature three categories: Field A for ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 dinghies, Field B for Four-Seventy dinghies, and Field C for 49er, 49er Fx, and Nacra 17 dinghies. The competition will adhere to international standards, with the opening ceremony scheduled for December 12th at 6:00 PM, and the closing ceremony and award presentation set for December 19th at 5:00 PM, at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club.

Currently, 20 countries have confirmed their participation, with a total of 137 boats and over 250 athletes. This event is expected to contribute to the tourism sector and prepare Thailand to host the Southeast Asian Games in 2025, establishing the country as a central hub for sailing competitions in the region.
