Italian Overstayer Busted in Pattaya for Theft Against Disabled Couple in Italy

Pattaya —

An Italian man, sought by INTERPOL, was apprehended in Pattaya for overstaying his visa and participating in a home robbery against an elderly couple with disabilities in his home country.

During a press conference on November 23rd, the Thai Immigration Bureau disclosed a successful operation in curbing international criminal activities within the Kingdom. Among the accomplishments was the apprehension of a 63-year-old Italian man identified by Immigration only as Edi.

According to police, Edi was wanted by the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and authorities in Rome for his role in a robbery against an impaired couple in Italy back in 2010.

It was reported that he broke into the home of a couple along with other accomplices and physically assaulted and threatened the victims. The suspects subsequently made off with 28,000 euros in cash (1.08 million baht) as well as other valuable items including diamond accessories, watches and two bank saving books.

The Royal Thai Police collaborated with INTERPOL and discovered that Edi had fled his home country to Thailand on February 8th, 2020, under a free visa scheme. Thai authorities traced his location to an undisclosed condominium complex in Pattaya.

Additionally, it was revealed that Edi reportedly obtained a retirement visa and was allowed to reside in Thailand until January of 2023. However, his temporary stay permission had expired, leading to his arrest.

Pattaya police put Edi into custody and now he is facing charges of staying in the kingdom beyond the permitted period. Legal proceedings will be conducted in accordance with Thai law, and extradition procedures are set in motion to return him to Italy to face consequences for his crimes.
