Some Pattaya Business Operators Want Chinese Police to Patrol City’s Tourist Spots

Pattaya —

Some business operators in Pattaya have come out to back the now-abandoned idea of inviting Chinese police to patrol tourist hotspots in Thailand, which aimed to enhance the confidence of Chinese travelers.

Although the possibility of the proposal originally mentioned by the Tourism Authority of Thailand has now been completely ruled out by the government and the Prime Minister has been continually denying it would ever happen after intense criticism online, some private tourism operators in Pattaya still wish for the idea to materialize due to the decline in Chinese visitors.

On Tuesday, November 14th, Mrs. Lamphueng ‘Lisa’ Hamilton, the chairperson of the Pattaya Nightlife Business Association, told Thai media that having Chinese cops patrol Pattaya tourist areas is a good idea because the collaboration will help build confidence especially in terms of safety among Chinese visitors.

She stated that she talked with her friends in China and learned that most Chinese tourists have been warned to be cautious when traveling to Thailand, which is a bad sign for tourism.

Therefore, such collaboration between the two countries’ law enforcements is a great way to enhance safety for Chinese tourists, particularly as Chinese police already have lists of criminals who might have fled to Thailand to conduct illegal businesses, she said.

Mrs. Lamphueng added that the presence of Chinese police will also help attract high-quality businesses and tourists to visit Thailand, leading to an increase in arrivals. She concluded that it will also strengthen the bilateral bond between Thailand and China.

That being said, the idea and proposal has been completely shot down by senior Thai leaders at this time including the Chief of Thailand Police who said it could infringe on the sovereignty of Thailand.
