Thai Rail Director Announces Upcoming Double-Track Railway Upgrade for Singapore-Kunming Project

On November 2nd, 2023, Mr. Pichet Kunathamrak, the Department of Thai Rail Transport’s director, publicly stated at the 4th iTIC FORUM 2023: Power of Connectivity and Smart Mobility about their future plans on the railway project: Singapore-Kunming, China.

The railway project currently connects five countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, and China at a total of 4,500 kilometers in distance.


At present, monorail systems are being used and will be upgraded into double-track railways by 2027 to connect transportation at a regional level from Southeast Asia to East Asia. It will potentially enhance the capability to transport goods and passengers more conveniently and faster.

“Furthermore, the Ministry of Transport is currently in the process of preparing to construct a brand new Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge paralleling with the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge,” said Pichet.
