In response to recent alarming incidents involving firearms, government agencies in Banglamung district, Chonburi province, convened a meeting on November 2nd, 2023, to address growing concerns over public safety.
Led by Mr. Phisit Sirisawadinukul, the district chief of Banglamung, the meeting centered on implementing stricter measures to regulate and control the use of firearms.
The decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident on October 3rd, 2023, where a 14-year-old kid used a modified blank gun in a shooting incident at the Siam Paragon shopping center in Pathum Wan district, Bangkok. This event resulted in injuries and loss of lives, prompting a call for enhanced firearm regulations.
To address these concerns, the Ministry of Interior of Thailand has introduced a series of measures and guidelines. These include an immediate suspension of the issuance of permits for carrying, importing, or trading imitation firearms, particularly blank guns. Furthermore, there is no longer a policy in place to issue additional licenses for new imitation firearms.
Gun shop owners are also required to adhere to these new regulations. They must suspend the issuance or import of firearms and ammunition, and owners of blank guns are mandated to present and record the blank guns they possess, along with their residential addresses, to the local registrar. Licenses will only be granted to registered shooting sports associations that operate as legal entities, in accordance with the Sports Authority of Thailand Act of 2015.
In a sweeping move, the issuance of permits for carrying firearms (Por. 12) will be suspended with immediate effect.
